Sad Reality: Only 20 Percent of Parents Care About Their Children’s Social Life

The Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) found that only 20 percent of parents ask about their children’s social life. Meanwhile, 70 percent of mothers and 60 percent of fathers in Indonesia mostly inquire about matters related to meals and school.

“Seventy percent of mothers and 60 percent of fathers simply copy the parenting style they received from their own parents. Most of the questions parents ask are only related to education and whether their children have eaten,” explained Rita Pranawati, KPAI Commissioner for Parenting, as reported by Metrotvnews (October 9).

According to her, parents tend to focus on their children’s academic abilities, often overlooking the social aspects of their lives, which are actually far more important. “Life isn’t just about being smart,” emphasized Rita.

In addition, a national survey involving 800 children found that parents do not communicate much with their children. Typically, conversations last only 1–2 hours and are mostly about school-related matters.

Rita believes that parents are not particularly interested in their children’s social life. “Social life is not a primary domain for parents in monitoring and communicating with their children. So if there is intimidation or bullying, it often goes unmentioned at home and parents do not ask about it,” she explained.

Due to the lack of parental attention, many children struggle to develop social skills, including situations related to violence, either as victims or perpetrators.

“KPAI has initiated collaboration with Bappenas and the Directorate of Community Education at the Ministry of Education and Culture regarding upstream parenting patterns so we can jointly address the issue of violence,” she added.

Considering recent cases of violence, it is important to reflect: have we given enough time for children to talk about their activities, friendships, and daily lives?

Parents should not just hope for the best from their children—they should actively give their best to their children. No matter how busy you are, make time to talk with your children about their social life, express your love, and teach them to love themselves and empathize with others.
