Tips for Preventing Gadget and Gaming Addiction

Gadget and gaming addiction has become a serious global concern. The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially classified excessive gaming behavior as a mental health condition known as gaming disorder.

A mental health practitioner from Atma Jaya University, Dr. Eva Suryani, SpKJ, explains that the consequences of behavioral addiction can be divided into two categories: physical and non-physical effects.

The physical consequences experienced by individuals who use gadgets excessively without time limits include obesity, injuries caused by prolonged gadget use such as carpal tunnel syndrome, sleep disturbances that result in poor concentration, and irregular eating patterns.

Meanwhile, non-physical consequences are more closely related to emotional and social well-being. These may include deteriorating relationships with others, declining levels of politeness, and reduced motivation to study or learn.

As reported by Kompas.com, there are several effective tips that parents can apply to help prevent gadget and gaming addiction in children.

Preventing Gadget & Gaming Addiction

1. Wise Gadget Use Starts with Parents

Responsible gadget usage should begin with parents. Today, many parents frequently use gadgets in front of their children without considering appropriate timing. In fact, parents serve as role models for their children in all aspects of life.

During family meals, for example, parents are often busy with their own devices, even though this moment is when teenagers and young adults may want to talk and share their concerns with their parents.

2. Proper Introduction to Gadgets

Parents should carefully consider the appropriate age to introduce gadgets to children. For instance, introducing gadgets to children under one year old should be delayed. At this age, parents are encouraged to prioritize direct interaction.

Before the age of six, children should always be supervised while using gadgets. Games allowed for children should focus on cognitive development rather than containing aggressive behavior or inappropriate content such as pornography.

3. Avoid Permissive Parenting

Parents are expected to maintain a consistent attitude regarding gadget use. Often, one parent may be very strict while the other tends to be permissive, which can create confusion and inconsistency for the child.

4. Establish Clear Rules

Parents should set specific rules regarding gadget use, such as prohibiting gadget usage in private spaces like bedrooms, so usage can be better monitored.

Another recommended approach is avoiding wireless internet connections at home and instead using wired internet options, which allow parents to maintain better control over internet access.
